How Does Gear Influence Creativity?
with Doug Peterson
We’re living through a renaissance of interesting and unique and diverse cameras and lenses. But increasingly photographers are using the same three or four cameras with the same three or four lenses. The photographer is far more than the hardware and software they use, but gear does influence style, rendering aesthetics, and establishes the range of problems you can solve in-camera. In this session we’ll look at non-commodity equipment and workflows and how they can help you stand out; some are crazy, some are quirky, and some are photographic classics largely forgotten in an age of yet another 5D Mark Something. Rediscover modern options for the Waist Level Viewfinder for more natural portrait angles without a cringed neck. Explore the unique look provided by nouveau alternative lenses like the Contax Zeuss 80/2 and Schneider IMAX 130/2. Learn how leaf shutter lenses provide three stops faster flash sync than 35mm cameras providing completely independent control of ambient and flash. See how technical pancake cameras and Focus Mask are bringing Scheimpflug back better than ever. Marvel at the other worldly effect of infrared. Aspire to shape the look of images on-set rather than in-post using Capture One Styles. Doug’s whirlwind tour of unusual and unique photographic tools will inspire you to engage with your work in new ways, and stand out from the crowd.

Working in Two Worlds: Walking the Creative Line Between Fashion and Wedding Photography
with Christian Oth
Christian Oth began his professional photography career in New York City years before he began shooting weddings. There are substantial differences between these two worlds; ranging from subject (your client at a wedding versus a model on set at a fashion shoot) to creative support (darting between guests on the most important day of a couple’s life versus the control that comes with being supported by an editorial team on set). He will discuss his techniques to bridge that gap and integrate the best of the pro photo world into the world of wedding photography. He will also share what he’s learned from weddings that can be applied to a fashion editorial shoot – because shooting weddings definitely sharpens your senses and influences a photographer’s ability to find the perfect shot in any environment.
