Taking my Studio Outside of the normal walls and into a Milking Barn

with Olivia Hellman

Trained at the in-house studio of Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, it was there I met Claude Shade who mentored me for the next 4 years. We mainly did advertising work, mostly composite, we were hard pressed to find a shot that didn’t have layers. After leaving the studio, I tried to do the portrait business model, soon come to learn that it was not easy.  While waiting for a client, I set up a still life that turned into a series.  Now, I mainly shoot fine art that I sell to designers or to stores on consignment. Taking the camera out of the studio is my favorite, especially into a field with cowboys. I will discuss how I took my studio outside of the normal walls and into a milking barn in the Sonoma Hills.

Compelling Images are Just the Beginning…

with Annabelle Breakey

To build a fulfilling career path in photography, you’ll need like-minded partners who share and value your creative vision. Like so many things in life, our career endeavors hinge on the relationships we create. You have great work, but how do you capture the attention of like-minded creatives and clients? Can you translate and nurture their interest into long-term partnerships and friendships? It’s these valuable collaborations that form the foundations of inspired work and a rewarding career.
Annabelle is pleased to share the lessons and experiences that shaped her path as a product and food photographer. Through hard work, creativity and perseverance, she has developed a network of friends and clients at leading brands such as Starbucks, Method, Ghirardelli, Taco Bell, Burger King, and Coca-Cola (among others). Ultimately, a passion for the craft, and a desire to share it, is at the root of any successful career in photography. “It’s not easy, but I love it.”

Keeping it Real for 30 Years and Succeeding

with Stan Musilek

Learn how Stan has gained success from his personal assignments, self-promotional, editorial and exhibition shoots for over 30yrs. He will discuss the numerous anecdotes, oddity, visual solutions as well as technical, and general artifice of the photography profession.  He will discuss his admiration for timeless imagery, what keeps him interested and inspired  to shoot, and the need to stay audacious, ruffle some feathers as that is was what attracted him to photography in the first place and should always stay on the artists radar.  He will also discuss the need to keep things in perceptive, “let’s not forget that in commercial photography we are not saving lives, so let us not take ourselves too seriously.”

Frame Averaging: How a Two Minute Exposure Can Last 1/125th of a Second

with Paul Reiffer

Frame Averaging allows photographers to get the most out of their camera’s dynamic range and effectively reduce noise in a single shot, all while capturing a long exposure image without the need for ND filters in many situations. With the work that Phase One have pioneered in delivering this technology to photographers in the field, the scope for a much more flexible workflow with incredible new exposure capabilities is increasing every day.
In this session, Paul will demonstrate and explain how the introduction of Automated Frame Averaging can provide you with a new level of creative control when it comes to decisions made in the field – allowing you to get the shot 100% right in camera, first, and every time.
